This article explains specific terms from the Avrios Electronic Driver Training module.

Stopping distance

Stopping distance is the distance that a vehicle covers from recognizing the situation to coming to a standstill, i.e. the sum of reaction and braking distance

Aquaplaning

Aquaplaning (also known as water slippage) is when a tire floats on the water film of a wet road. In this case, a wedge of water pushes its way under the tire contact patch, leading to a loss of grip. At the moment of aquaplaning, no guidance and braking forces can be transmitted to the road surface. As a result, the vehicle can skid.

Braking distance

Braking distance is the distance covered by a vehicle in the time between pressing the brake pedal and coming to a standstill. The speed is reduced only slightly at the beginning and only sharply at the end of the braking distance.

Fog lamp

Also known as fog lamp, is the front vehicle lighting designed to better illuminate the road in foggy conditions.

Tread depth

The tread depth of vehicle tires is the depth of the tread grooves, i.e. the distance from the tread plane to the base of the tread grooves or cuts.

Reaction distance

Reaction distance is the distance a vehicle travels in the time it takes the driver to recognize a situation and start pressing the brake pedal with his foot. Speed does not change during this time.

Safety distance

The safety distance is the distance from an object, such as another vehicle, to prevent a hazard from occurring. According to § 4 para. 1 StVO, the distance must be large enough to stop even if the vehicle in front brakes suddenly. What this means in detail thus depends strongly on driving speed and traffic conditions.

Hit-and-run

Hit-and-run refers to the unauthorized departure of a road user from the scene of an accident following a traffic accident for which he or she is responsible.

Instruction

Instruction is the explanation and instruction of the entrepreneur for a safety-appropriate behavior of the insured persons, which can be supplemented by practical exercises.

First-aid kit

A first-aid kit, also colloquially known as a first-aid box or Red Cross box, is a container containing bandages and other first-aid equipment.

Wildlife accident

A wildlife accident is a traffic accident with a wild animal. Either a vehicle collides with a wild animal or damage occurs as a result of an evasive maneuver caused by the animal.
